Tryon Equine Hospital is a private specialty referral center serving North Carolina, Georgia, and the South Carolina Upstate. We offer state of the art, 24-hour surgical and medical care, and advanced lameness diagnostics. Our ambulatory veterinarians bring the same quality medicine to farms and are available 24 hours a day for emergency care.

Located in the Foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Columbus, North Carolina (just 30 miles east of Asheville, North Carolina, and 20 miles west of Spartanburg, South Carolina), we are a boutique practice that focuses on cultivating collaboration with clients, caregivers, and colleagues.

Position Overview

Tryon Equine Hospital is seeking an Anesthesia Veterinary Technician with hands-on prior horse experience and a passion for delivering best-in-class medical care to join our busy Equine practice.

The ideal candidate will have prior experience conducting medical screenings, administering anesthesia and medications, performing routine procedures, and working in a fast-paced, team-oriented setting. Applicants must be committed to delivering the highest caliber of patient care and client service and have a team-focused mentality.

Responsibilities

Assist veterinarians with appointments by:

  • Preparing treatment areas for examination of horses

  • Proactively collecting, organizing, and setting up equipment, supplies and drugs required for daily appointments

  • Calculating and administering anesthesia

  • Placing IV catheters

  • Managing all aspects of anesthetic care; induction, intubation, recovery

  • Monitoring patient levels and control of anesthesia machine

  • Holding, restraining, and jogging horses

  • Assisting with and/or performing diagnostic imaging and treatments

  • Assisting with unloading and loading of horses on trailers as necessary

  • Conducting follow up calls to clients, as requested by veterinarians

  • Serving as the communication liaison from clients to veterinarians, and recording conversations accordingly in records/HVMS

  • Proactively anticipating and completing tasks to make the day more efficient and operate more effectively as a team

Assist with patient care by:

  • Administering intravenous and/or intramuscular injections

  • Performing venipunctures

  • Applying wound dressings

  • Conducting catheterizations

  • Taking and recording vital signs

  • Preparing patients, medications, and equipment for treatment or surgery (if applicable)

  • Assisting veterinarians during surgical procedures (if applicable), including conducting post-surgical and/or post treatment cleaning procedures

  • Collecting blood samples

  • Performing routine laboratory tests, documenting results and communicating to veterinarians

  • Submitting and/or analyzing lab samples including intrauterine infusion, inseminating/reproductive procedures, and cultures

  • Other duties as assigned

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2+ years Equine Anesthesia Veterinary Experience

  • Excellent horse handling skills

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to build and maintain relationships internally and externally

  • Superb organizational skills that reflect proven ability to multi-task and own the details

  • Tech-savvy, adaptable to new software and programs

  • Resourceful and collaborative team-player

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality

Compensation/Benefits

  • Full-time, hourly position, $20-$24 per hour + on call stipend

  • Day/evening/weekend/on-call shifts are a required part of this position. Flexibility and adaptability are required, as the demands and nature of a 24/7 emergency hospital require
